The history of the Swedish Volvo PV-club

The Swedish Volvo PV-club was founded on 13 March 1977. The pioneer who started it all was Conny Björkman from Falköping. He put in announcements in several motor-magazines and gathered people for a first meeting. At this meeting the club was founded.

It was decided that the club would include the models PV 444, PV 544, PV 445, P 210 (Duett) and P 1900. It was also decided that the club would publish the club-magazine the PV-Entusiasten and it would contain articles sent in by the members.
The first meeting was attended by 41 persons and at the end of 1977 the club had 165 members. Since then, the club has grown with about 200 members a year to almost 5000 members and last year it celebrated its 20th anniversary. It is the largest veteran-car club in Sweden who deals with a specific make and model.

The objective of the club

The club is a non profit organisation and its main objective to preserve these models of Volvo cars:

PV 444

PV 445

PV 544

P210 (Duett)

P 1900

The club should do this by:

  • supporting the members in their work with repairing and preserving these cars in a skilful and correct way.
  • preserving literature and documentation within the clubs sphere of interest in order to give the members access to it.
  • cooperating with other organisations and companies which can support the clubs intentions and objectives.
  • arranging meetings for members and guests to support the clubs intentions.
  • issuing the club magazine PV-Entusiasten.
  • obtaining a positive reputation through the members and their preserving work with and active use of their cars.
  • disseminating understanding of the cultural value of sustaining Swedish car culture.

Environment

Since most people pay more and more attention to environmental issues, it's important for the Swedish Volvo PV-club to develop in that field.

Problems concerning most older cars are oil leakage from the engine, more exhaust emissions because of worn valves and not to mention the fact that most of the cars are run on leaded fuel. In combination with worn carburetors and leaking exhaust systems, this could in the future lead to car clubs getting a reputation of being pollutive, meaning that our possibilities to, for example, arrange meetings at camping and recreation areas. This would be a matter of regret, especially in consideration of our aim to sustain Swedish car culture. Already today we can offer our members spare parts that reduce exhaust emissions of their cars: valves, gasket kits, oil filters, exhaust systems and renovation of cylinder heads and engines. Renovation of a cylinder head means among other things that new hardened valve seats are fitted and that makes it possible to use unleaded fuel. From now the club offers catalytic converters. The type has been tested together with a B18 engine in cooperation with an engine laboratory in Gothenburg and the results showed a reduction of CO emissions by 15 %, HC by 38 % and NOx by as much as 63 %.
